Have I already mentioned what my series “them and us” is about? It’s about empathy.
While trying to express my thoughts about empathy in my paintings, I am also trying to learn more about empathy (and thanks to audiobooks and podcasts I can do both at the same time 😊). Currently I am looking at it from the angle of non-violent communication, a concept developed by the US psychologist Marshall Rosenberg.

While I definitely prefer to paint in the morning, sometimes I feel the urge to paint at night - especially after a busy and challenging day at work. Hey, I hope you found some room for creativity today! Here you can see me painting with a scientific mindset, meaning: „see what happens!“. Out of curiosity I tried some different material for rolling out the colour: an aluminium bottle from a vending machine serving hot coffee (!) that I brought back from Tokyo. ⛩️Nice souvenir. Keeping up a morning art routine next to work and family life is challenging - keeping it up while you are travelling for work, in an amazing city bustling with spring energy is even harder. And little by little… another „them and us“ painting came into being. 🚀Since this series is about overcoming conflicts with empathy, I wanted to get into the empathy-mood while painting. 💫So I listened to a very insightful YouTube channel on nonviolent communication, an approach for conflict solving developed by US-psychologist Marshall Rosenberg. What I adore about Rosenberg is his pragmatism, nicely illustrated by one of his most famous quotes: “You don’t have to be brilliant. It’s enough to become progressively less stupid.” On this brilliant and yet pragmatic note - have a great rest of the week!☀️

Currently I am trying to figure out how I can balance two of my conflicting passions: travelling and painting. While I love travelling and the energy I get from discovering new places, I have also discovered throughout the last year that travelling is actually a challenge for me in terms of maintaining my creative routine. Yesterday it was time for second chances. I took out a pile of sketches that I had almost given up, but did not want to fully abandon yet. And then I gave myself 5 minutes for each one in which I tried to find out whether adding some negative space could give them a second life. See for yourself - this was my first specimen!
